It's easy to show someone how to use a new piece of software, but it's much more difficult to convey why they should care. It can be even harder when that person is running an outdated operating system. But because there are still computers out there running Windows 7, here are few tips for showing somebody who's never used Windows 8 how to install Microsoft Office 2013 on their PC. Some people will find the transition from one version of Windows to another rather jarring, so instead of trying to fit in two different concepts in one long tutorial, this post will focus solely on getting the basics in place before dealing with anything else. Before you do anything else, make sure that your Windows 7 system is up to date. That means that you've installed the latest service pack and all other updates — including any that Microsoft has released since then. The next thing to do is to download and run the Office 2013 installer. That installer will determine whether your system is capable of installing the suite without any extra work. If it works, you'll be able to get along with using an old-style perpetual license and never see the new Office interface. If it doesn't, you might even get away with running Office 2013 in Windows XP mode — but we'll deal with that separately. The quickest and easiest way for most people to install Office is to buy a boxed copy of the suite and use an installation CD or DVD, either from a brand-new PC or from one of those you already own. You'll have to be sure that you've got a recent copy with Service Pack 1 installed, but after that, the installation is as quick and easy as installing any other application. There are a few wrinkles, though. Office 2013 comes in multiple editions with different feature sets and prices. You can't buy a version of Word or Excel or PowerPoint without also buying a version of Outlook, even if you don't want it. And you can install all of them on one computer — but not at the same time. If you want to run Excel 2013 while testing how well Word 2013 fits into your workflow, you'll need two computers or virtual machines. One of the changes that Microsoft has made to the way it sells Office over the past few years is that it no longer ships discs with software, even when you buy a boxed copy. Instead, you get an activation code. That sounds like something that only pirates would be interested in, but when you buy Office 2013 through Microsoft's own online store, your boxed copy will include "offline media" for each product in the suite. If you purchase Office through a different channel, or if you bought an earlier version of Office and want to upgrade to 2013, your retail purchase might also include this booklet. cfa1e77820
